I suspect we both know we’re lingering this morning as we lay in bed, make a big breakfast, and spend extra time getting ready. We know why, but we can’t say it out loud without ruining things.

So, I enjoy these last moments as I soak in the memories from this cabin. It was worth the pain that is probably going to follow because now I know.

Above everything, Josh is a great father, and that sweet baby deserves the whole world. I would do whatever I could to help him get custody at this point even if he wasn’t going to fund the charity.

This feels so important. It’s bittersweet, but I’m happy to feel like I’m doing something meaningful. I’m glad I can help them.

Still, it comes with a cost as we get into the car, sitting far too close together for the long ride back to the city. I feel like I’m leaving something important behind, something I didn’t even know I brought with me.

We talk for the first bit of the ride, trying to find some normalcy. But we need time to adjust to the new place we fit in each other’s lives. So, we soon fall into silence.

When he drops me off at my apartment, he opens the car door, and we hesitate for a moment, looking into each other’s eyes. I swear I see something that wasn’t there before.

The lust is now evident as he looks at me like he’d like to join me in my bedroom before he goes. Care seems intermingled with it now, too. I worry I’m being delusional, trying to make him mirror what I feel. But it seems so real I can’t help but believe it.

“Thank you for a great week,” I say.

“Thank you for giving me the chance to show you that I am the best choice for Nico. I’m glad you came. It was… surprisingly nice.”

We smile, knowing full well we can’t mention what happened now that we’re back in the city. Those forbidden romantic encounters can’t follow us here.

“I agree. I guess it’s back to reality now.”

He nods. “I hope you have a good week.”

His tone is so formal, it’s jarring. Is this what we are now? Casual acquaintances stuck together by these weird circumstances?

“You too.” I turn so I don’t reveal the feelings that are starting to bubble beneath the surface.

“We should at least hug each other,” he says. “So we get used to it. You never know who’s watching.”

I take a deep breath. He’s right. We will have to keep up appearances. I just worry that if I touch him now, I won’t be able to let go.

I remind myself that I’m strong. No matter what, that is a truth I will always have. So, I turn into his open arms and hug him.

This simple touch conveys far too much, so I ensure that it’s short and sweet. He seems a little taken aback when I pull away so quickly like he doesn’t expect me to be able to resist.
